Tip of the Week: Sending and Receiving Faxes

Did you know that you can send and receive faxes from your computer? All you need is a modem - the same one that you use for dial-up internet access. To set this up in Windows XP, go to the "printers and faxes" control panel from the Start menu. If faxing is already set up on your computer, you will see a fax printer listed here. If you do not see one, click on the "set up faxing" link on the left side of the window. Note that you may need your original Windows XP installation CD to complete the setup.

Once the fax printer is listed, you can send a fax from any program by simply using the "print" command and selecting Fax as the printer. Windows will then ask you for the fax number you would like to send to, and give you the option of using a cover page. You will need to be sure your modem is installed, plugged into your phone line, and you are not currently connected to the internet via dial-up.

You can also configure the fax printer to receive faxes. Be careful, though, if the phone line is also used for voice calls. If the fax is set to automatically answer the phone, a person calling you might get very confused if Windows answers and starts sending fax tones. The best way to deal with this is to have the person sending a fax call you first and let you know that a fax is about to be sent. Then, turn on the auto-answer feature and allow Windows to receive the fax.
